Benefiacial Bacteria for Ponds and Lakes

Controlling water quality in a pond or lake is subject to many varibles. The amount of nutrients that are avalible in the water collumn will determine the amount of algae that is produced in the water. When ponds are first built and filled with clean water their are not a lot of nutrients in the pond. Over time leaves, dirt and debris, fish waste, runoff and other nutrients find their way into the pond and settle into the pond bottom. These nutrients act as a stimulant, or food source for excess aquatic weeds, alge and other water quality problems.

The use of enzymes and benificial bacteria has proven to be one of the best tools along with aeration a pond owner can use to maintain water quality. Beneficial bacteria are mini vacuum cleaners that work on the pond bottom to consume and digest organic materials like leaves, grass clippings, dead alge, fish waste etc. Left in the pond these materials will contribute to water quality problems.

All ponds contain natural bacteria. The problem is that these are usually anaerobic bacteria (they do not need oxygen to survive) and they digest sediments very slowly. Most benificial bacteria's are aerobic which do require oxygen to survive ( this is why it is very important to have aeration in the pond) but these bacteria decompose organic materails at a much faster rate. This in turn will help with water quality and clarity.
